Obedience Brings Blessing

Matthew 7:24-27 "Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. (25) And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. (26) And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. (27) And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it."
Jesus ends His great Sermon on the Mount with this little parable. He compares our lives to builders. His Word (the Scriptures) are the building materials and obeying (following) His Word is essential. Storms are a part of life. Those of us who have lived in the Midwest understand that, especially in May & June when the tornado season is at its peak. When those storms come, we want the security of knowing that our home is secure, made well, able to withstand the storm.
John 14:23-24 Jesus answered him, "If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. (24) Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me.
Obedience to the Word of our LORD-- it is essential --- like oxygen for our body --- obeying the Word of our LORD is essential for the Christian life. Do we really love the Him? That love is revealed thru our obedience to Him. We may say we love Jesus, but the proof of that love is in our obedience. The LORD may very well call His people to an action that seems unreasonable to them. He may very well lead us into a storm, where we question His care for us. Hebrews chapter 11 is filled with stories of men & women who were called by God, directed by God, led by God into some serious & difficult situations. Yet each one of them revealed their love for their LORD thru their obedience.
James, the brother of Jesus puts it this way -- James 1:22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. It is one thing to be deceived by another, but to actually deceive ourselves.... how foolish! The LORD has given us His Word for guidance, strength, direction, wisdom. His Word is life! In Revelation 19, we see Jesus our LORD returning with His heavenly army. From His mouth comes a sword, and with that sword Jesus annihilates the armies of His enemy. The Word of God is powerful! We have His Word, we can destroy the lies of the enemy with it. We have His Word, we can shine Light in the darkness that is prevalent in our day! We have His Word, we can bring great flavor to our communities! We have His Word --- let's use it!
