Haggai 2:3-5 'Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How do you see it now? Is it not as nothing in your eyes? (4) Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, declares the LORD. Be strong, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land, declares the LORD. Work, for I am with you, declares the LORD of hosts, (5) according to the covenant that I made with you when you came out of Egypt. My Spirit remains in your midst. Fear not.
The covenant the LORD speaks of in verse 5 – that was first made over 900 years prior to this day (Ex. 33:14). Over 900 years …. Maybe some folks thought God had forgotten. In Haggai’s day, the temple of the LORD lay in waste, the people of the LORD were messed up … even the priests had some serious issues. Yet, God, the God of comfort, mercy and grace reminds them of the covenant He made with them over 900 years earlier. He does not forget! Even in the midst of a disobedient people – His covenant remains. Even when His people have neglected to worship Him – His covenant remains.
Zerubbabel & Joshua had been given the task of rebuilding the house of the LORD – a daunting task. Yet the LORD declares His presence and His strength is upon them. When it seems as though the task at hand is impossible, when it seems as though you are going at it alone – Remember, God does not break His covenant. The LORD will not forsake His children. His Spirit is in the midst of His children… therefore we need not fear.
Listen to Paul as he exhorts the Corinthians…. 2 Corinthians 4:8-10 We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; (9) persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; (10) always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies.
Afflictions, perplexing circumstances and great persecution will come, but they cannot destroy nor need then cause discouragement or despair – Praise God how great is the LORD!
Go ahead, go feast on His Word, Haggai isn’t too long of a book – feast on it at breakfast or lunch!
