Hebrews 2:1-4 Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. (2) For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, (3) how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, (4) while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.
The author of Hebrews has just given an incredible dissertation on the deity of Jesus Christ and now in chapter 2 he warns that we ought to really pay attention to those truths, lest we drift away. Have you ever considered that? The possibility of drifting away from the Truth… the Truth of Jesus Christ? Evidently it is possible. Even Jesus warned people in Mark 4 of the possibility of the things in this world growing so strong in our lives that the word of God can be choked out, proving unfruitful.
My fear is that we the church don’t take these warnings seriously. We casually brush the warning off. Just the other day I was having a conversation with a dear sister in Christ, when it became blatantly clear that the truths of God’s Word she had once lived by were no longer being followed. Once she realized what was keeping her from obedience, she made the necessary changes – commenting how easily she had fallen into a trap.
It is one thing to hear the Truth, to even recognize it as Truth, but what must be done with the Truth? It must be put into practice in our lives. We must pay very close attention to God’s Word. We must pay very close attention to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Drifting away from the One who laid down His life – it seems impossible. Drifting away from the One who always speaks Truth into our lives – it would seem improbable. Drifting away from the One that said He would never leave us or forsake us – it would seem idiotic. Yet, the Word of God warns us of the possibility. The enemy seeks to destroy us. The enemy speaks nothing but lies. The enemy will turn on us at the blink of an eye ---- it would seem that we would guard our lives against such an enemy. Yet, the truth is, many of us buy into the lies and are drawn away. Resist the devil and he will flee!
