Matthew 9:36 But seeing the crowds, He was moved with compassion on them, because they were tired and scattered like sheep having no shepherd.
I am so thankful for the grace & mercy the LORD Jesus shows toward me – His compassion, His love --- As I read the whole account that continues in the 10th chapter of Mathew, I was drawn to a few points….
1.There was such great need! And the urgency that Jesus felt to see the need met.
a.Literally, the text says that the crowds were being harassed – spiritually. 1 Peter 5:8 says the enemy is seeking whom he may devour!
b.Unprotected sheep will be slaughtered.
2.There is a plentiful harvest! It’s out there! Jesus could see it!
a.There was much work to be done to bring in the harvest
b.There is much reward when the work is accomplished
3.There were few laborers!
a.Labor means work --- the harvester knows the work is hard
i.Harvesting is dirty work --- stinky, sweaty work
b.One of the things I hear people talk about in America is the lack of desire American people have to the hard work of the low-wage job – like picking berries in field all day --- we know there are migrant workers who do that – because the pay is low and the work is hard
c.Spiritual harvesting is hard work – and most days the pay is minimal- yet, Jesus tells His disciples to pray for more laborers. If they were 21st century Americans, their prayer might sound like, “Dear Lord, there are people who need Jesus, I work with people who need Jesus, I live next door to people who need Jesus, I have family that need Jesus …. So would You send someone to share Jesus with them?”
4.Chapter 10 – Jesus sends the disciples – they become the laborers they were to pray for!
Are you able to see those around you who are being harassed by the enemy? Are you able to see those around you who are wandering, alone, & hurting? If so, YOU are the laborer … pray for the opportunity to minister and then go and minister. If you can’t see them …. Pray for sight.
