Ecclesiastes 9:11-12 I considered and observed on earth the following: The race doesn't go to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor food to the wise, nor wealth to the smart, nor recognition to the skilled. Instead, timing and circumstances meet them all. (12) In addition, no human being knows his time: Like fish captured in a cruel net, or as birds caught in a snare, so also are human beings caught by bad timing that surprises them.
There is a (or was) a popular bumper sticker that was also made into a t-shirt that said, “stuff happens” – only the word stuff was another “s” word and it only had 4 letters. I always wanted one of those shirts. I am sure many of you have heard of “Murphy’s Rule” – if it can go wrong, it will. Well, in the Youngberg family, there is an old saying, “Youngberg’s Rule makes Murphy’s Rule look like a day at the beach!” I have been trying to learn to just “go with it” – stuff happens and we just go with it. Stuff doesn’t always happen the way we think it should. The fastest runner doesn’t always win the race. The best team doesn’t always win the championship (KU bball proves this year after year! --- insert smiley face emoji here).
Jesus told His disciples not to worry over the day to day happenings of life, instead, He told them to seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and then, the rest would take care of itself (Matt. 6:33). Jesus knew the troubles of life (Matt. 6:34), He knew the struggles that man would have to endure day after day—especially if said man were following Him. Our LORD also reminds us that even though in this life we will have trials and tribulations, we can be of good courage because He has overcome the world! When (NOT IF) life becomes difficult, when (NOT IF) the trials are overwhelming, it is great to know that we have a LORD who is standing with us, to comfort us, to lead us, to strengthen us. When it seems hard to hear Him, to see Him, to sense His presence, turn to the Word. Open your Bible and He will speak to you, you will see Him and know that He is there.
