John 13:8-9 Peter said to him, "You shall never wash my feet." Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no share with me." (9) Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!"
The will of God. Are we truly ready to receive anything Jesus brings our way? Really? Anything? Peter wasn’t. I give Peter a hard time, but truth be told – I think he had a better walk with Jesus than I do. Peter walked on water. Peter was on the top of the mountain when Jesus was transformed. Peter was the one Jesus singled out when He told Mary to tell of His resurrection. Yet, Peter was not ready to receive everything Jesus brought his way. Jesus was not going to wash Peter’s feet. That was way below Jesus’ status. Peter didn’t want the One he served to be seen as a servant – what might people think?
“You shall never wash my feet!” That was Peter’s statement to His Lord. “You shall never be my servant!” Jesus’ response is chilling – “If you will not surrender to what I offer, even this little thing, then you are not mine.” WOW! We want the Jesus who saves; the Jesus who conquers. We want the King Jesus. Are willing to accept the Jesus who serves?
Many see Jesus as some kind of Santa Clause – here’s my list Jesus, I’ve been good this year, give me what I want. But, are we willing to receive what Jesus wants to give? What if instead of being the Great Physician that heals, He comes along side and says, “My grace is sufficient, let me tend to your wounds.”? What if instead of the jail bars breaking loose so you can walk of prison, you find Jesus sitting in the cell next to, leading the ones who imprisoned you to His grace? What if instead of giving you the life you always dreamed of, He leads you thru the valley of the shadow of death?
I love Peter’s response – Ok LORD, then wash all of me! Take all of me. Use all of me. I think Peter added –“Cuz I surely want all of YOU!”
The CHRISTmas season, we are going to be asked to serve in many ways – we are going to want to be served, we are going to get tired, even drained – but we have a LORD who has first served us – that we might be empowered by His Spirit, with every Spiritual blessing in the realms of Heaven – surrender yourself to His service – you won’t be disappointed!
