Proverbs 10:8 The wise person accepts commands, but the chattering fool will be brought down.
Do we see God’s Word as “orders for life” or simply suggestions? Are we seeking to align our lives with God’s Word or are we making our own way? Way back in the late 1990’s there was this popular “Christian” slogan .. WWJD? – What Would Jesus Do? Supposedly, the church folk would ask that question when faced with the daily dilemmas of life. I think it was mostly a “youth” thing … youth leaders trying teach their students the idea of Christian morality – “Would Jesus drink that? Would Jesus wear that? ….” Not sure how well it worked.
WWJD – not a bad concept …. If we actually looked at the Bible to find out. Solomon makes a good point here … God’s Word is not given to us as a suggestion …. His Word has been given to us with the implication that we are to follow it. James tells us that we are to be quick to listen (James 1:19) – our ears ought to be on full alert, ready to hear what God is saying …. And our ears are to be trained to hear His Word only. There are many deceivers out there that make their words sound like the Word of God --- with many deceivers … many will be deceived. Are we preparing ourselves to hear from God? Are we being obedient to what He commands?
In that same verse James says we are to be slow to speak … Solomon says the one that is quick to speak is a “chattering fool” who will be destroyed. I like the way Solomon speaks! Do we count our words? (No, I don’t mean to count the quantity) Do we measure our words? Are we carefully speaking about the things our LORD would have us speak? I have noticed that people will “say” one thing on social media, but live out something totally different – I have a feeling Solomon would call them “chattering fools”. Their words are empty & meaningless.
God has given us His Word that equips us for any and all work He calls us to. A Word that brings light to darkness, life where there is death and strength where there is weakness. Only a fool would choose to ignore His Word.
