Matthew 9:23-24 When Jesus came to the official's house and saw the flute players and the crowd making a commotion, (24) he said, "Go away! The young lady hasn't died but is sleeping." But they ridiculed him with laughter.
In the background here in the office “O Come let us adore Him…” is playing as I read Mathew 9. Quite the contrast … Adore Him or ridicule Him. The professional mourners knew a dead body when they saw one – so Jesus saying she isn’t dead made them laugh. “This guy is a nut-job … we know she is dead. What kind of crazy is He?” This isn’t the first time somebody laughed at the news the LORD would bring. Think of Abraham & Sara when told they would have a child at the ripe ol’ age of 100 & 90-ish respectively. OR Zechariah when the angel Gabriel told him that his barren wife Elizabeth would have a son – His laughter and doubt cost him 9 months of silence.
Why do we doubt God? Because His news makes very little sense to the human mind. He speaks of and does the impossible. He is God … so He does “God” things. We are human and therefore limited to “human” things. So, when God steps in and does His God thing or calls a human to do a God thing, we look at it and say, “Ummm, that’s just not possible for me God.”
Yesterday morning I was greeted at the church house doors by a dear lady that was troubled and looking for answers. She has been struggling with health issues for a time and has been seeking the LORD’s healing and strengthening hands. She told me that when she awakened this morning and started to pray that she would experience His healing today, the LORD told her, “Sweet daughter, today, you are healed!” I said, “Well praise the LORD!”. She agreed me with, but then stated, “What about my doubt?” See, there it is .. we all have it …. God tells us the impossible has happened or is going to happen, and our finite minds just can’t fully grasp it.
The LORD knows of our doubt. The disciples had it … He questioned them about it … “Why do you still doubt?” He would ask. He didn’t belittle them …. He just pointed out their doubt … as if to say, “You need not doubt, you can trust me. I know your limitations and I will overcome for you.” I pointed out to this sweet sister that her “doubt” was overcome by faith – the faith she had been given by God to seek His healing in the first place! We finished our conversation speaking about His faithfulness and His greatness. “O come let us adore Him, O come let us adore Him, O come let us adore Him, Christ the LORD!”
