Jonah 3:10 When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.
Oh the mercies of God! The incredible mercy of God! The Ninevites were not certain of God’s action, but they were certain they needed to repent. They didn’t make excuses for their sin or rationalize their behavior – they knew their evil ways and they knew they had to cry out to God.
Our Nation, the World for that matter, seems to be more interested in making excuses for our evil – in many ways what the LORD calls evil, we celebrate as good (Rom.1:32). Nineveh was an evil place when Jonah showed up with the LORD’s message – so evil that Jonah didn’t want them to hear the Word of God because he knew that when the people repented, God would forgive. Jonah had great faith in the LORD – he just had a bit of an anger and obedience issue! Jonah knew what the LORD would do – he just didn’t want it to happen. Jonah understood the power of God – he understood the will of God (that no man should perish) – yet Jonah was perfectly content letting the Ninevites experience the wrath of God. Oh, I am so grateful for the mercy of God.
In His incredible wisdom, the LORD has placed His church on this globe for the very same reason He sent Jonah to Nineveh --- to proclaim His Good News. Many, if not all of us have people in our lives that we would love to see come to know Jesus as LORD & Savior – we WANT THEM TO BE CONVERTED, unlike Jonah. God, by His mercy has allowed us to be His messengers, how cool is that! We get the pleasure of taking the only message of life to those who are dead! It’s like we have the cure for cancer – surely we wouldn’t hold back the cure for cancer! Look for the opportunity the LORD will place before you TODAY and share the Good News.
