Daily Bread October 2, 2017
I went to bed thinking about this verse – I wasn’t sure where it was & I couldn’t remember the context .. so first thing this morning I went hunting for it. Jesus had just taught about the vine and branches – bearing much fruit as we abide in Him and His Word abides in us.
I was thinking about this verse because I see too many people who are missing out on “full joy”. They’re not miserable, but they’re also not experiencing full joy. It seems obvious to me that Jesus desires that His joy be in us and that joy would be full. A more accurate translation of the second phrase in this verse would be “my joy remain in you” – there is the possibility of losing joy. King David experienced it -- Psalms 51:12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. --- David lost the joy of salvation – not salvation, but the joy of it – when he sinned. Peter experienced when after he denied Jesus – I think Peter experienced a loss each time he denied Jesus, with the greatest loss after the third denial and the rooster crows. Certainly, Judas experienced a great loss of joy when he betrayed Jesus.
I am certain that the LORD does not desire that any of His children experience a loss of joy --- He says it right here … John 15:11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. He speaks to us thru His Word – it is by His Word that we are led to salvation – it is by His Word we are healed – it is by His Word we are equipped for every good work – it is by His Word we are strengthened – It is by His Word we are fed. Seems very clear that His Word brings His joy. If that is true (it is) --- then when we don’t spend time in His Word, His joy will not be full. If we are not in His Word, then we won’t be sharing His Word …. And His joy will not be full. If we are not in His Word and not sharing His Word, then we are not living according to His will – and we experience a loss of joy. I pray your joy is full.
