John 13:8-11 Peter said to him, "You shall never wash my feet." Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no share with me." (9) Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!" (10) Jesus said to him, "The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you." (11) For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, "Not all of you are clean."
“Not all of you are clean.” Those are the words Jesus spoke to His disciples …. And not a one of them questioned Him … not a one asked Him who it was or what He meant… they simple sat in utter amazement and watched as He finished washing their feet.
First, note that Jesus washed the feet of His betrayer! Jesus knew who would betray Him – talk about grace! Unmerited favor! If I knew the man was about to hand me over to be killed …. Not real sure I would be washing his feet. Jesus did more than talk the talk – He walked the walked. Jesus is the guy that taught these men to love their enemies and pray for those that spitefully persecuted them – and that’s exactly what Jesus is showing these men at this very moment.
Second, note that Jesus specifically told them that at least one of them was not clean. It wasn’t until Jesus pointed out that one of them would betray Him that they asked for details (v.25). Even when Jesus said, “the one to whom I give this morsel of bread” they totally missed it. They were so blind to the fact that one of them could betray Jesus (v.26-30). As I read this account this morning, my gut wrenched. My first thought was “how could they be so blind?”. Then I remembered what Jesus taught His disciples in Mathew 24 – that the deception of the enemy will be great, so great that many will be deceived – so great, that the “elect” would be deceived if possible. I had to ask myself, “what if Jesus walked into my office this morning and told me I was unclean? Would I baulk at His words? Would I make excuses? Would I tell Him, “Your Bible says that You shouldn’t judge me!”? Or would I simply ignore His statement? In total honesty, I pray I would throw myself at His feet in total agreement and beg Him to cleanse me! I pray that I would be like Peter and cry out, “Lord, my hands and my head! – Make me clean!”
