Matthew 6:30-34 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? (31) Therefore do not be anxious, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' (32) For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. (33) But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. (34) "Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
Worry …. It’s a killer. It kills joy & it can lead to our physical death! Why do we worry? One reason may be that this old world is a scary place with scary people. On the news this morning I saw the faces of the two men that were put to death in Arkansas last night – those dudes looked very scary! In our text, Jesus says we worry about our physical needs – Is there any food in the pantry? Is the well dry? Do I have the right clothes for the season? I meet many people in our community that truly have to worry about these very things. There are children in our schools that did not have breakfast this morning and most likely won’t have dinner tonight. They didn’t have a winter coat this past winter and the shoes on their feet today most likely don’t fit. The struggle is very real. The LORD does not try to minimize the struggle – He says in verse 33 that our Heavenly Father knows our need. I have read this passage well over 100 times – yet today, I think was the first time those Words hit home… “my Heavenly Father KNOWS my need..”. Jesus is telling the people that God has already taken care of the need and we will find His supply WHEN WE SEEK FIRST His Kingdom & His righteousness.
We might not receive the food we want or wear the clothes we want, but we can rest in the assurance that He will meet the needs of hunger, thirst and nakedness. Too often we think we are responsible for meeting our needs. So we work and toil, we pursue with great might … and after all that, we still come up unsatisfied. The answer my friend is found in the Word of Jesus – “seek FIRST” – it is not only positional, it is relational – Seek it first and seek it in all things. If you are employed, that job is not to gain a paycheck, it is your mission field. Your friendships are not there for your fulfillment, they are your mission field and/or your disciples – your family is the same.
Are you hungry? Feast on God’s Word BEFORE you fill your belly AND while you are filling your belly. Are you thirsty? Drink in the Living water that is Jesus – no water on this Earth tastes as sweet and is as refreshing. Are you naked? Do your clothes not fit? Put on His righteousness!
Go ahead, try it – just for today – Eat first His Word, drink in the water He offers… put on His righteousness --- I promise, your day will be like none other day in your life! …. Bro. D
