Psalms 87:1-5 A Psalm of the Sons of Korah. A Song. On the holy mount stands the city he founded; (2) the LORD loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwelling places of Jacob. (3) Glorious things of you are spoken, O city of God. Selah. (4) Among those who know me I mention Rahab and Babylon; behold, Philistia and Tyre, with Cush— "This one was born there," they say. (5) And of Zion it shall be said, "This one and that one were born in her"; for the Most High himself will establish her.
I had a visitor this morning and we were discussing a counseling situation. As usual, when we came to an issue of what to say about a particular circumstance, I asked the LORD to direct me to His Word. The first verse at the top of the page was verse 5b (the Most High Himself shall establish her). The issue we were contemplating was what to say to a young woman who was struggling in her marriage, in her faith and in her health. We both giggled at God’s provision!
We had been discussing the circumstances this young woman faced. She had many giants in her life that were threatening her, she wasn’t sure where she could turn. In verse 4, Rahab was a monster of ancient pagan mythology and symbolized Egypt. Babylon has always been seen as a great enemy of Israel. Two superpowers shown as fierce enemies of Israel will one day worship the LORD in Zion!
When days seem dark, when trials threaten to overcome, there is One we can always look to. One who will establish His people. One who will keep His people from falling. His Word will illuminate the path of His people – His people need to be in the Word!
