Colossians 4:2-4 Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. (3) At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison— (4) that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak.
These are instructions for every believer – not just a select few. Every person who names themselves by the Name of Christ is to be a person of prayer – continuously. I pray … a lot … but I can’t say that I pray continuously – I need to be reminded …. I am thankful that God puts these reminders in my life through His Word, by His Spirit … AND .. He uses His people to remind me as well. I love the fact that people ask me to pray for and with them – it tells me they see me as a person of prayer – it also reminds me of what we’ve been saying around FBCO these last few months – “Prayer Works”.
Here, Paul has a specific request for the church – “pray … that God may open a door” for the Word to be proclaimed with clarity. Two things come to mind as I read this passage: (1) Sometimes (maybe most of the time) I know what I want to say, it makes sense in my head, but when the words come out – a lot of the time it doesn’t make sense. I need to surrender my thoughts and tongue to the LORD so He would fill me with His Word – His Word is the ONLY Word that leads to salvation, eternal life, rescue, grace, mercy…. And (2) Every person that names themselves by the Name of Christ ought to be speaking the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I hear many people talk about God opening a new door for them – at work, in relationships, in ministry – the only door the Bible ever speaks of God opening, is the door that leads to the opportunity to preach the Gospel. Are we praying for that door to be opened for us? Would we walk thru that door if opened?
